HOW IT STARTED BEFORE WE GOT TO THIS

ABOUT UTOPIC0DE

UTOPIC0DE is a company providing a platform that creates a happy space for LatAm tech talent to establish a community where they can connect, upskill, or find job opportunities. With a friendly voice, an available discord channel, organised events, blog content, and a strong team of recruiters, UTOPIC0DE has established a holistic approach to recruitment. What is unique to UTOPIC0DE is that it demonstrates a keen interest in identifying hard skills, as well as soft skills in their recruitment process to ensure that users are provided with appropriate job matches to their level of seniority.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge for the team was to discover what users were finding most difficult when going through their application process. As such, the aim became to streamline the assessment process to improve engagement for users and make it more scalable for recruiters.

A THREE-DIMENSIONAL APPROACH

1.

Client

UNDERSTANDING
UTOPIC0DE

Approach: Interviewing UTOPIC0DE's two co-founders and analysing their current product.

DISCOVERY

  • The business is rapidly expanding and needs to make the assessment process scalable.

  • There is a need to standardise the assessment process, while retaining a human-touch element for their users.

2.

Business Landscape

EXPLORING TECH
RECRUITMENT

Approach: Competitive & comparative analysis, specifically a feature inventory.

DISCOVERY

  • General lack of features that allowed users to stay clear on the company's purpose, as well as where to start their journey of applying for a job

  • Improving clarity would need to play a role in maintaining engagement for the whole process

3.

User

GETTING TO KNOW
SOFTWARE DEVS

Approach: Undergoing user interviews with various developers.

DISCOVERY

  • Devs often struggle with being connected to jobs that suit their skills and seniority in an efficient and properly structured manner

  • Assessment processes are often irrelevant and untrustworthy

THE PRIMARY QUESTION THAT CAME FROM OUR RESEARCH

How might we provide a purposeful and engaging application process for software developers, while ensuring scalability for UTOPIC0DE's recruiters?

DELIVERING & TESTING SOLUTIONS

TESTING & LEARNING

With our solution centring around gamified tests, video interviewing to align with competitors, and a report to create a clear sense of purpose around the assessment, we focused our Maze tests around gaining feedback about these additions.

LEARNINGS FROM THIS PROJECT

Working closely with four other UX designers to produce a body of work that the client was happy with, was a highly fulfilling experience. With a short time frame to produce numerous deliverables, every step of the process was dense with lessons about the design process, client relationships, teamwork, and my strengths and weaknesses. I was surprised by my ability to take a leadership role in areas of the process and proud of my confident delivery in communicating creative ideas under pressure within a small time frame. This project additionally guided what areas I want to strengthen which include UI skills, project management, and recruiting the right user. Overall, the most crucial realisation was that UX design is not a linear process and the best way to approach a problem is to take the process as inspiration rather than an instruction manual.
